How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?

I recently wrote an article about this very question, and I have often been asked the same question so I thought I would post the answer here. Having said that, it’s not just a simple answer that will cover every breed of dog, because some dogs do have skin conditions which means they have to bathe more frequently.  However, for the purpose of this article I will be giving some general guidelines, although you should always consult your vet if you are concerned.

Basically if I can smell my dog when he enters the room, I know it’s time for his bath, either Shadow or Wolf, sometimes they both just stink, depending on what they have been rolling around in.  However, the be more informative, it is said that your average dog should have a bath about once every 3 months, yet many people bathe their dog more than is needed.  Moreover, you can bathe them too much, which will strip their coat of its natural oils and their coats will start to become dull looking.

If you have a dog that has a skin condition, then he may need bathing once a week or more with special shampoo from your vet, if this is the case, always follow your vets guidelines to the letter.  Moreover, always use a dog shampoo, as human shampoo may irritate them, and it may have fragrances that could be an issue for your pet.  Finally, brushing your dog causes no harm at all, and does in fact benefit them greatly, and you can brush them every day, it prevents tangles and matting and spreads their natural oils leaving their coat nice and silky.
